Moving a rhododendron by pulling with an ATV Alppiruusun siirto mönkkärin vinssillä ja ahkiolla
A handsome 16 year old and 2.5 meter high rhododendron hybrid was growing on my plant field. It was my cross 'Haaga' x vernicosum and I wanted to plant it on…
The plant was surrounded on three sides by other rhododendrons and the only way to move it out was to get it up a 1 m high ridge and then over a ditch.
I dug under the sides of the root ball as far as possible and then pulled the heavy root ball loose from ground using the winch cable of my ATV.
The rhodo was pulled up on the ridge with the winch. Now it was time to think how to make a bridge over the deep ditch.
Five meter planks and an old metal roofing sheet made a perfect bridge. The trunk was protected with thick cloth to avoid damage from the cable.
The winch of the ATV drag the rhododendron over the bridge.
The plant was cranked abroad a winter sled (ahkio).
Pulling the heavy rhododendron was easy with an ATV.
